Nature, Culture & Community in Hilton Head, SC

Nature, Culture & Community in Hilton Head, SC

I-95 SC Exit #8 to Hilton Head Island!
Feels like home!

There's an alligator center-left!
This is outside our favorite
Mexican restaurant,
La Hacienda where we like to
split steak fajitas.
Returning to Hilton Head Island, SC for three weeks at the end of June was like returning home.

It was more beautiful than ever and our friends were all so glad to see us and we were so glad that so many of them were around and could take some time to visit!  In
returning here, we feel like we belong. Even though we don't have any property, it feels like the right place for us. We hope to find many places like this, where we feel we belong, where the food and entertainment is excellent, and where the conservation of nature and healthy lifestyles are important. To be a full-timer, you have to have the attitude that beauty is all around and be certain that it will increase in the future. Count on it!

Saying Goodbye to best friends
is hard!
People ask whether it bothers us to say good-bye all the time. It did bother Dede when we first went full-time, over ten years ago. At that time we were staying in Virginia Beach (Holiday Travel) and she grew attached to the girls who came from overseas to work at the resort--

dozens of college kids from Czech Republic and Germany. They were here in the summer then disappeared in the fall. Boo hoo! Depression rolled in with the winter clouds!

Then, over time, just like the game Peek-a-boo fades after the

infant mind develops to realize that
objects are permanent, and someone is not gone forever, the sad game is over. Our new, happy game is to use all forms of communication- Internet, phone, email, airplane, to make
dates on a large-scale.  For example, this fall we will meet up in the mid-west with friends we made last winter as CamperForce workers at Amazon. We'll have a grand time!

Beverly picked Dede up at the Savannah airport
and we walked leisurely through the historic parts!
Forsyth Fountain in Forsyth Park

Mansion on Forsyth Park
where you can get a $5 martini every
third Wednesday of the month. Cheers!

Lunch at our favorite casual hangout on River Street.
Tubby's on River Street where you can get a free shot
whenever a large ship comes by!

Home on the Road!
Hilton Head Motor Coach Resort
on the South end of the Island.
Hilton Head
Motor Coach Resort

The resort looks great! We are very grateful to our close friends, like family, who invited us to stay as guests on their site for three weeks. Everything was as lush and beautiful as ever!

The closest restaurant on foot is now Captain Woody's, relocated around the corner! The next closest favorite, Signeys, is still serving up fabulous baked items and light lunches! Another favorite restaurant down the street, The Black Marlin was still serving up the best lunches over at the Palmetto Bay Marina. And while we're on the topic of favorite lunch spots, off the island, The Cottage in Bluffton still has the best tea lunches to be remembered forever--Dede has been trying to make their orange granola--she has it pretty close by now!  And in Bluffton, the place to go is the Red Rooster Cafe, on Ribault.  Needless to say, we ate out every day for either lunch or dinner! Well, except for a few poolside barbeques!

Our pad. Perfect for our picture window out the back.
Thank you for the place to stay!

Beautiful sites where the outdoors is an extended part of your home.

Holly and Bill's rig (from last year).
It's a beauty and it's a steal at $99,900 if you're in the market!

Ready for Grandkids!

Kim's favorite place in the world!
He picked up some students and resumed hitting with
friends Martin and Rob. (They don't keep score.)

There's always a court open and lights are on after dusk.

Dede's favorite oasis.

Beautiful clubhouse where Kim n Dede performed many a time.

Our dear friends, Bev and Gerry's resort home.
They're building a home on the Island!

Our fabulous friend Robert with his grand-daughter and puppy.

Fourth of July at the resort--bike and pet parade!

Music blaring! Smiles all around!

Beach and Pool day with Jeannelle!

Joo Soo (from Seoul, Korea) and her growing family!
Joo Soo plays the organ at Providence Presbyterian, where Dede was pianist/organist.
While we were here, Kim sang Dede's arrangement of "You Raise Me Up" for Sunday service.
Click here to listen to a dinner party recording.

Kim n Dede performed at our favorite Italian restaurant,
Bistro Mezzaluna.

Jeannelle and Dede took a tea party to a friend in Savannah
who is recovering from surgery.

Nature and Beauty Hunts with Photographer Friend, Beverly

Pinkney Island Nature Preserve

You can't come to this area without appreciating the beautiful marshes and wetland fields!

The Painted Bunting, Beverly Gaddy
Even if you don't get out of your car, you will find yourself transfixed by nature's beauty! Pinkney Island is one of the most prolific sites where Dede and Beverly recorded bird songs and photos for Dede's second Symphony.
Click here to listen to a computer-synthesized mix of this 8-minute work. Dede has submitted this work to the very talented Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra for consideration in a future season! Say positive prayers!

Two of the birds we wanted to feature eluded us--the owl and the painted bunting.  We captured the latter during this outing! Click here for a recording of the Painted Bunting who is singing while Beverly took this photo. (A distant Cardinal responds between songs.) The owl awaits another visit!
Butterfly Pavilion at Coastal Discovery Museum,
Honey Horn Nature Preserve.
Here you can see and learn exactly which plant species
will attract which butterfly species!

Beverly Gaddy is such a talented photographer!
Who else could make these beasts look so sharp!?

Baby Gator, probably 2YO.

Nest of gator babies/juveniles (1-3YO?).
We were standing within two feet before we realized it!
Good thing they weren't any younger or we would have been
apprehended by a watchful mama gator!

You can buy her cards at most places on the island,
or special order a pack through email!

The action at the beach was fabulous.
More tourists mean better economy for this resort town!

This is what Jazzmaster Kim does
when he's not singing or playing tennis.

Sated with the love of family and friends, we start our LONG DRIVE of 2,550 miles!  Here's what our route looks like, with long stops in Foley, AL (1 month), San Antonio, TX (1 month), Mesa, AZ (4 months). We'll get familiar with the way of things in each area by staying awhile. Maybe we'll find another place we belong!

Thanks for reading our blog! Just a couple more stops until 2014!

Kim n Dede
